November/December favorites

A few of our most favorite recent pics... the boys are almost 9 months old now!

Look at those eyes - Robbie definitely got those from Daddy :)

Before he figured out how to pull himself up to stand, this is how Robbie tried to do it!
Then he figured it out!

Robbie's first Chilson-Patterson "pile-on"

Robbie, Mommy just put all those toys away!

Life imitating art? Art imitating life? We put this shirt on Robbie, then put him down for a nap. The rest is history :)

Lots of playing gets done in the bathtub. Getting clean is optional!

Jakey sporting daddy's hat.
The next few pictures are evidence of Jakey's new "funny faces" -- a few weeks ago he got a couple top teeth, and started using his tongue to play with them. He has so many new crazy faces -- including a new "scrunched up nose face" that we have yet to catch on camera... enjoy! :)

Recent Videos

We. Are. THE. WORST. at. updating. our. blog. It's been 3 1/2 months since we did it. Our boys are big and strong and healthy and happy, and here's a peek at their first Halloween:

Jakey, as a cow.

Robbie as a tiger.

This year's Halloween party looked a lot different than last year's "grown-up" party. This year we started at noon!

Yes, the boys are 16 weeks old - here are their 9 week photos!

Seven weeks ago we had photos taken of the boys. Seven weeks ago the boys were not on a nap schedule so I never had time to do anything with those photos! So they're a few weeks late, but aren't they cute?!?!

16 weeks

So you keep asking yourself... why doesn't Gretchen post more videos of all the stuff her boys can do now? Easy answer. They refuse to do it on camera! Seriously. So you'll have to take my word for it, for now...

At almost 16 weeks, this is what they're up to:

Jacob:
This kid loves to move. Usually this is done mysteriously - as in, I put you to bed at that end of your crib with your head this way, and you woke up at this end of your crib with your head that way. We may never know what combination of scooting/rolling/kicking got him there! He loves tummy time and can hold his head up really high. He also can easily roll from his tummy to his back. He's working on back to tummy, although he loves sleeping on his side, so usually when he gets halfway over he just falls asleep! Jakey loves to stand up. One day I went to pull him from laying down to sitting up, and instead he straightened his legs and stood right up. He smiles and laughs when he's on his feet. He can even stand on his own while hanging onto a chair - not steadily yet, of course, so we stay close - but what a strong kid!

Jacob is the quieter of the boys so far. He does a lot of babbling (though still not as much as his chatterbox brother!), but does it in a very quiet voice. He has the funniest little giggle when I tickle his chest. Usually it starts with a huge smile and silent laugh, but then the giggle leaks out :) Jakey's standard smile is a cute little closed-mouth grin, but he's starting to open his mouth and give real smiles, too.

Jacob loves to watch TV. Seriously. Sometimes I have to turn the TV off so he'll eat - he tries to turn his head to watch and can't swallow at the same time. It's a little early for this vice, isn't it???

Robbie:
This child is happiest when he stretches out on his back. He loves to kick his legs and to flirt with himself in the mirror above his play gym. He does this funny thing where he looks crazed - flails all his limbs around while laughing... his idea of exercise, I suppose. He is not as interested in tummmy time as his brother is (this could be because he spits up nearly every time he does it - poor kid!), but Bob did catch him rolling over once from his tummy to his back, so soon he'll be on the move, too.

As I mentioned before, Robbie is our chatterbox. And he is LOUD. It sounds like this: la ah ah WAH ah O ah EE oh ah wah... and he'll go on like that for 10 minutes or more. When he gets progressively louder is generally means "I'm about to melt down, come get me" but usually his talking is just for his own (and our) entertainment.

Robbie is Mr. Social. He loves to flirt with waitresses, and gives us HUGE open-mouthed smiles all the time. He has a loud laugh when we really get him giggling. With both he and his brother, the best way to get a big laugh/smile is to play airplane/rocket ship/super baby - something that involves flying over mom or dad's head - I truly hope to get a video of this soon, as it is SO funny!

Both boys are being pretty good about complying with Mommy's new napping schedule. Most days they will both nap for at least an hour and a half in the morning and again in the afternoon - but here's the important part - AT THE SAME TIME! :) Thank God for small miracles :) Another plus is that the little cat naps they take in between are usually at different times, so I have one-on-one time with each baby - it's so much easier to bond with one baby at a time, so this is the best of both worlds.

The question we get asked most is: Do they sleep through the night? Yes, mostly. Yes, they sleep a total of about 10 hours each night (YAY). Yes, they do this without us having to feed them during the night (YAY). However, they still wake up in need of reassurance of some sort - re-swaddling the blanket, putting the pacifier back in, etc. Usually this accounts for us getting up 4-7 times each night. Thus, we never truly get a good night's sleep -- BUT it's so much better than the "feed them every 3 hours" period.

After our long road trip to Chicago last week, the boys (especially Jakey) are not so fond of the car. There is a lot of screaming involved. I suppose they think every time we put them in car seats that they have to be in them for 9 hours again??? I hope this phase passes soon - it's quite miserable when they both get going.

Every day is hard work for mommy and daddy - my goal every day is to get myself to bed by 9:00, not that it ever happens! We're tired all the time, but wouldn't trade it for anything... I can't believe how much they've changed already. I already miss how little they once were, and at the same time can't wait for them to grow up and talk to us.

Father's Day

Below is the Father's Day card we (Jacob and Robbie) put together for Daddy. It was cuter in person, but mom's too lazy now to scan it to get all the cute pics, etc. Here's the excerpt from a boring word document... :)
======================================================

Top 10 Reasons Our Daddy is THE BEST:

10. He brings home the bacon (whatever that is!)

9. He gives the very best rocket ship rides!

8.He teaches us cool things, like how to engineer buildings (we don’t know why it takes him so long – it looks easy!)

7. He helps keep mommy sane and happy so she doesn’t mind so much when we cry

6. He brings us cool places like target field and the boat

5. He loves to take naps with us on the couch

4. His chest is our favorite place to cuddle

3. He changes a mean diaper – even if we do get poop on him every once in a while

2. He loves to brag about us and all the stuff we can do already

1. He loves us a lot and is so good to us every day

Thanks, Daddy! We love you!

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!!!

Oops... kinda forgot we were supposed to be keeping this blog!

Well, here we are again - finally! Life keeps getting in the way of documenting life! Here are a few highlights from the past weeks:

On mother's day, we surprised my Grandma and Grandpa with a visit at their nursing home in New London, MN - our first road trip (only 2 hours!) and the first time Vince and Vivian met the boys! They were so excited - aren't these photos precious? Our boys are so lucky to have great grandparents.

Both boys with Great Grandma Vivian

Robbie with Great Grandpa Vince

Had to snap this photo to show Grandma Jean and Grandpa Don that the boys fit into their Florida shirts... for about a minute and a half. I can't BELIEVE how fast these kids grow! Seems like every day I put something in the "too small" pile.

Ah, here it is - the first day on the boat for 2010. We've been a bit busy (ha!) so our boat is still in our driveway, but our friends Kelly and Bonita invited us out for an afternoon over Memorial Day weekend. The boys were amazing - didn't mind being in their life jackets, and essentially slept through the whole ordeal. That's good news, as we hope to spend lots of time on our boat in the near future.

Robbie woke briefly to say hello!

Would you believe these are the smallest hats we could find?

Every night, we swaddle up Jakey and put him in his crib, on his back. Every morning, this is how we find him. This boy loves being on his side, and his tummy. He can even roll over from his tummy to his back already.

One of my favorite "twin moments." Our guys are so different from each other in so many ways, we get a kick out of it when they decide to be "twinny" every once in a while.

Spaeking of the boys having different personalities, and wanting to do different things at different times... This photo is a prime example: Robbie was kicking and smiling and cooing and going crazy in their "gym" (he, so far, is our "social" boy - loves to "talk" and smile and laugh). So here he is, kicking and cooing right in Jacob's ear. Jacob, you'll notice, is sleeping through it all (on his side, of course)

Grandma Kathy has been here several times to help us with the boys. They love her so much that they even talk to her on the phone after she has to go home - I'm certain that they recognize her voice.

My favorite moments are when the boys are entertaining themselves and we can just sit back and watch them be happy and learn about the world around them. Enjoy these videos of the twins doing just that:

(That's Robbie on the left and Jakey on the right)

You may notice that Jacob and Robbie seem completely unaware of each other, even as they are hitting and kicking each other. Too funny!
Today (one day short of their 3-month birthday) is the first day they've ever made eye contact and smiled at each other - adorable! So we hope to have photographic proof of that soon.
Thanks for your patience - we hope you keep checking back for our next update... we'll try to do it in a more timely fashion this time around! :)

Highlights from weeks 4-7

Well, we've been awfully busy living our crazy lives, and not so good about documenting it here... here are a few pics to get you caught up on how the boys are growing - SO FAST!
Descriptions of the above pics follow:
-Obviously, those sleep wedges are not doing the trick any more for keeping the boys in place :) We've discontinued their use because the twins are too big and strong, even when they're sleeping!
-The boys had their first play date the other day, with Michael, the son of our friends Mark and Heidi. Maybe some day we'll get a photo of all 3 of them smiling... for now, Jakey's doing his best to smile big enough for all of them!
-Daddy with Jakey - need I say more?
-The boys hanging out on the couch - can't believe I got 2 smiles!
-For their baptism, Jacob and Robbie got lifejackets from Jason and Johanna (Jakey's godparents). None of us have laughed this hard in a long time!
-Baptism photos are with Jason and Jo, and Robbie's godmother, Suzy. and our priest, Fr. Abraham.
-Robbie enjoys the music and lights on his new toy.
-Jakey checks himself out in the mirror.
-I bought this play gym yesterday and it's been a big hit with the boys - I can't believe how well they can entertain themselves already... so fun to watch :)

Remember us?

Many of you have asked how Merfy (dog) and Flip (cat) have handled this big change in their lives. In a word, they've been wonderful! Although they're a bit jealous... In the above photos, Flip is obviously annoyed to not have enough room in Gretchen's lap, and Merfy seems to think that whoever sits in the boppy pillows gets the attention! Merfy is quite protective of the babies and worries about them when they cry. I actually think he's getting less sleep than we are. :)
